This year’s Love Supreme Festival was an absolute triumph and it was a privilege to be there representing the Jen&Sooz Jazz Show at Meridian FM.
With this celebration of jazz, soul and funk on our Sussex doorstep, the Festival remains close to our hearts. Attending for the third time running, we’ve seen attendance grow beyond 25,000, acts and g
enres expanded, and the atmosphere and vibe hit top levels of excitement and passion.
Headlined by music stalwarts Elvis Costello, Level 42 and Earth Wind and Fire; acts ranged from pop and soul through to jazz and funk. We were entertained by performances as varied as Steve Winwood and Tom Misch; Mavis Staples and the James Taylor Quartet.
Staying true to our roots, we sought out and successfully interviewed some of the biggest names in jazz, both established and new. Imagine our delight to have interviewed none other than Lalah Hathaway, Ian Shaw, Hailey Tuck, James Taylor, Jazz FM vocalist of the year Zara Mcfarlane and the sensational saxophonist Denys Baptiste. Talking to these world-renowned jazz talents about their latest albums, next tours and gigs, was incredible for the profile of our Jazz Show as well as a personal experience to be treasured.

So what’s next for the Jen&Sooz Show? As a community radio show we’ll continue to take every opportunity to cover local jazz events like the Love Supreme Festival. But maybe we’ll spread our wings and get further afield, bringing coverage and interviews with jazz, soul and funk talent up and down the country at Festivals including the North Sea Jazz Festival and the St Lucia Jazz Festival which is growing in reputation to our committed audience of like-minded jazz enthusiasts.

Abi Flynn is a soulful jazz/RnB singer and songwriter from Brighton. Signed to Brighton’s Tru Thoughts Records, she sets herself apart from the rest with her innate ability to deeply connect voice with heart and spirit - reaching past the depths of her inner world and into the collective space - and combine strong musical innovation with offerings of home-rooted nostalgia and tantalisingly memorable hooks. Whether performing a powerful amplified stage show or as a totally mobile marching band, the Brass Funkeys bring together some of the most talented musicians in London in an eclectic live show bursting at the seams with ideas and infectious energy. Hailey Tuck’s story sounds like a far-fetched film script. A teenager from Texas with a bob borrowed from Louise Brooks and a suitcase stuffed full of vintage dresses takes off for Paris with her college fund and a dream of becoming a jazz singer. An Italian countess becomes her benefactor, she wows the crowds in crazy cabaret clubs and finds herself underground jazz venues before her music wins her fans around the world and a legendary producer invites her to L.A. to record her debut album. Hailey Tuck’s story sounds like a far-fetched film script. Sharing Caribbean family heritages, it’s a product of their joint exploration of the meeting points between jazz and the rhythms of Jamaica; reggae, Kumina, calypso and nyabinghi, shaded with hints of the psychedelic. James Taylor, one of the great British instrumentalists of his generation, has taken his trademark howling Hammond sound to the masses for over 25 years; still famed for its upbeat, energetic live shows... with no sign of slowing down. The band’s relentlessly entertaining tunes take inspiration from the rare-groove style funk, and boogaloo funk of the 60s and 70s and, the band is, without a doubt, one of the most important jazz-pop crossover outfits in British live musical history today. MF Robots is a duo who are behind some of the biggest soul, jazz and funk records of recent years.
